You've decided to buy a ukulele, now what? My ukulele buying guide will help you choose a ukulele that suits your needs and budget.
Choose a price range and size.
I suggest you refine your search by specifying a price range and a size. Once these two factors are sorted out, the rest of your ukulele research becomes much easier.
Pick a Price Range
I think a budget of $50-$100 is ideal for most beginners.
In my experience most ukuleles in the $50-$100 range are fairly well made instruments that sound great and are comfortable to play. You can certainly spend more, but it's not necessary to buy a good entry-level ukulele.
These are instruments that you can play for a long time without feeling the need to upgrade them. And if you decide to upgrade to a more expensive ukulele, your old ukulele makes a great replacement for camping, traveling, or loaning out to friends.
What to expect when you spend more?
What's the benefit of spending a little more on your first ukulele? There is no definite answer to this question, but as your budget grows you will notice:
Better overall construction and playability
Sophisticated cosmetics such as bindings, inlays and rosettes
Exotic woods and materials
Top, back and ties (for better sound)

Avoid the really cheap
ukulele. I know it's tempting to save up a few bucks and buy a ukulele online for $25 or $30. After all, these cheap ukuleles often don't look all that different from more expensive ukuleles, especially in photos on the internet.
Quality Issues On Cheap
Ukulele Unfortunately, ukuleles in this price range are far more likely to have serious issues that can affect the sound and make it difficult to play.
In my opinion, many very cheap ukuleles hardly qualify as real instruments. The cheaper they are, the more problems can arise.
Choose your body size
ukuleles come in many sizes, but the most popular are soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles. All of these sizes are suitable for beginners, however I personally prefer the concert and tenor ukuleles.
Some first-time buyers of a ukulele are put off by the variety of sizes. Don't worry, I promise it's not that complicated!
The soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles are tuned and played the same.If you learn soprano, you can play quite easily on concert or tenor.
So why bother with different sized ukuleles when they are all tuned and played the same way? The answer mostly boils down to sound and playability.
How the size of a ukulele affects the sound
In general, a larger body means a bigger sound. Concert and tenor ukuleles tend to be warmer, richer, and more resonant than soprano ukuleles. The larger body size also produces more bass and volume.
sopranos tend to be a little quieter and have more "rings" that are heavier in the top end. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's worth considering before buying a ukulele.
How the Size of a Ukulele Affects Playability
Concert and tenor ukuleles are larger in scale than soprano ukuleles.
The scale length is the distance between the saddle and the nut.

A longer scale means the frets are further apart, giving the fingers more room to maneuver.This means that concert and tenor ukuleles are easier for some people to play due to their longer scale length.
soprano frets may feel a bit narrow for some players, especially those with large hands or thick fingers.
What is the best ukulele size for beginners?
I think any of these sizes are suitable for beginners. However, I personally prefer the larger size for concert and tenor. I think their richer tone and ease of play make them an ideal starting point for most beginners.
I don't want the highs to sound "bad" though. Many people love the soprano for its compact size and bright, clear sound. Soprano ukuleles are also less expensive than their equivalent concert and tenor
ukuleles. There is another popular size, the baritone ukulele. A step up from tenor, it is the largest of the four most common ukulele sizes.
The baritone ukulele has a slightly different tuning than a soprano, concert, or tenor ukulele.Because of this unique tuning, baritone ukuleles aren't exactly a match for most standard ukuleles.
That's why I didn't include this size in the beginner's guide.
